An ethernet connection is faster but it does not matter because cable modems are not fast enou gh to reach the speeds of ethernet or USB. Ethernet is better though becasue USB will increase CPU utilization, and slow down your system. Post Comments |

Hi Militar, Go with ethernet ones.
it's more realible and faster imo.
anyway, just want to let you know about this site.
http://www.dslreports.com
it's great site about dsl mainly, and cable too. mostly broadband, you can ask and get answers at their forum.
They are nice and helpful, you can even test your speed and there are guides on how to maximize your connection [tweak].
Have fun and Good Luck

Hi Guys:
thank you for the responses.
I actually have already tried both out of necessity. I reformatted my hard drive and re-installed Windows 2000 clean install and when it was done I couldn't GET ONLINE.
Wow, was I freaked, because once again I called my brother and he couldn't find the problem, and so I called my cable provider, and spent about two hours online and finally I was told that I had a computer configuration problem and I needed to call microsoft!!!
He gave me a number and I called Microsoft and I must say I was surprised by the great Technical Support I got. Even they couldn't figure out the problem, and so the Microsoft tehnical Support engineer arranged a 3 way conference call with their networking experts and then with roadrunner technical support here in Florida!! Wow I was really impressed but alas no one could figure out my problem!
I was told that they would send out a technician at 8 am the next morning to fix the problem.
After I hung up, I remembered that my Cable Modem supported both USB and ETHERNET! Taking a chance, I plugged in the USB cable, popped in the CD containing drivers, and my computer installed it without a hitch!
In 5 minutes I had Internet Access again. The next day, when the Cable Technician came, she asked me to plug in the Ethernet Cable, and unplug the USB and in about ONE MINUTE, my ethernet card was working.
She told me that my realtek Ethernet driver had not be "enabled" in DEVICE MANAGER. I was shocked because I know that I had installed and uninstalled it about a dozen times and it didn't make sense.
After she left, I decided I needed to reformat my hard drive because my HAL was corrupted (my 3D games and movies were jumpy)....
So I reformatted and re-installed windows 2000 for the second time in two days and again, NO INTERNET CONNECTION!!
At that point it occurred to me that during both installations of Windows 2000, the installation process included a choice I had never before seen! At the end of the installation process, Windows was now for the first time ask me if I would like to install the DEFAULT windows networking drivers or select (customize) which ones to install. Since the default ones were the ones I use, TCP, Print Sharing, etc.., and since I have NO IDEA what to "customize".. LOL,, I selected the default option!
It occurred to me that perhaps the complete networking interface was not being installed ...
I remembered that the first time when I had desperately attached the USB cable, when windows discovered it, there was a screen which said "installing networking components"...
... and I think that maybe those components are not being installed during my clean install of windows using the default Ethernet interface...
So, for the second time in two days, but with a purpose, I unplugged the Ethernet cable and then plugged in the USB cable, and sure enough there I was alerted that Windows was installing new Networking Components to support my cable connection!
So I checked and I was online, and I then UNPLUGGED the USB modem and plugged in the Ethernet cable and rebooted and VOILA!!! .. I had internet access!!!
So after all the experts, I THINK that I may have figure d out (to a small degree) how to fix it myself!! Post Comments |

I personally like Ethernet. It has lower CPU utilization and O/S were made for it, where USB has to be made to work. If you have too many USB devices, it may dampen USB throughput. If you ever intend on having a small home network (e.g. XBox or Sony PS2 or a laptop) you may find it better just to go ahead with the NIC card.
USB modem does not use an extra Irq though
Make sure to do the cable (MTU) tweak to maximize your broadband speed. Test at the above DSLreports.com site before and after tweak and you will be glad you did. This will help your online UT experience If you need this, let me know. It will not harm your system and is highly suggested. [I know how you are with tweaks.
Good Luck....

Hi Yamini, My MTU is set at 1500. I think roadrunner can change a lot of the cable settings right from their main office with this new Toshiba Cable modem.
I do know that they can upgrade the firmware and everything right from the cable office and I'll never have to do a thing!
What MTU patch would that be?

Stick with Nic !!!! See my post on Cable Tweaks ..... To do the buffer trick you need to have it on the NIC Tweak it up and jump to warp speed! My new record peak throughput 4560.1 Kbps ! Beyond the warp 10 barrier!

Akshay, Thanks for your input!!! I have just read your Cable tweaks and they are simply AWESOME!!
well done!
Unfortunately, the spiffy buffer one I probably cannot use, since I am running Windows 2000 and we don't have that "ini" file.....
Wish I could *sigh*.
There's so much that you have written, I'll have to read some more.

| Speedquide has the MTU/cable patch. When you say y our MTU is already at 1500, do you mean on your N IC. Sincerely, |
|
Yamini, I'm using the NIC now. Hey, I need your expertise big brother!
